Police boost forensic capabilities with mobile unit

Police boost forensic capabilities with mobile unit

The Guyana Police Force on Tuesday received the keys to a brand new customized mobile unit for use by the Criminal Investigation Department to boost its forensic capabilities during investigations.

Today the keys were handed over to the Commissioner of Police Hicken. The vehicle will be under the direct command and supervision of Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum. Queensway Security procured the 2024 Mercedes Benz vehicle On behalf of the Ministry of Home Affairs for the police force.

The vehicle was outfitted based on specs as requested by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Guyana Police Force. The supplier indicated that Queensway Security as part of the procurement package, will provide the police force with after-sales services for the vehicle for some time.

Crime Chief, Assistant Commissioner of Police Wendell Blanhum lauded the procurement and pointed out that it will be deployed as necessary to enhance the work of the CID. He called on the government to also examine the procurement of similar vehicles requested by the force for other functions, aimed at suppressing and fighting crime.

Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken told the small gathering of Commanders and other officers that this new asset of the Police Force forms part of building capacity. He referred to the previous procurement of vehicles now in Regional Divisions, enhancing the work of the Guyana Police Force.

Commissioner Hicken said not only is capacity being built but the procurement of advanced assets and resources for the force forms part of the overall modernization of the Guyana Police Force.

Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn said he had first had experience witnessing the manner and condition under which the forensic team from CID headquarters work and saw the rationale behind the vehicle request, which was handed over on Tuesday. He believes that with the vehicle and its capabilities, the Guyana Police Force will have an even better impressive clear-up rate for crimes committed,
