On February 20, 2020, Otredis Duarte Campos, a Cuban national, was shot and killed by two bandits as he made his way to work along Cummings Street in Georgetown

DEAD: Otredis Duarte Campos

For killing the man, 28-year-old Patrick Felix Smith was given a 16-year prison term when he appeared before Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall on Tuesday.

Last month, at his arraignment before this Judge at the Demerara High Court, Smith entered a guilty plea to a charge for the capital offence of murder.

During Smith’s Tuesday sentencing hearing, Judge Morris-Ramlall determined that a 16-year prison sentence was suitable for the offence.

The amount of time this offender has been detained pending trial must be subtracted from the 16-year sentence, according to instructions given to the Prison Service by the Judge.

This case was prosecuted by State Counsel Rbina Christmas, State Counsel Simran Gajraj and State Counsel Praneta Seeraj.

Defence attorney Teriq Mohammed represented Smith.

On February 20, 2020, at around 06:44 a.m., two men on a motorcycle, one of them was holding a gun, shot Campos, 35, a butcher and father of two, as he was walking to work.

He was employed at the Rossignol Butchery as a butcher.

Robbery was identified as the reason for the shooting.

Smith was pointed out as the rider of the motorcycle.

Following a physical argument, the pillion rider pulled out a gun shooting Campos three times in the body before the two rode off.

An injured Campos was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
