Kareem Charles was on Tuesday sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment on a murder charge.

The labourer, 40, formerly of Bennett Dam, Rosignol, West Bank Berbice (WBB), admitted to killing 24-year-old Mohammed Arshad Ally when he appeared Berbice High Court Judge Jo Ann Barlow earlier this month.

DEAD: Mohammed Arshad Ally

On March 1, 2019, Ally, also of Bennett Dam, Rosignol, had  an iron plunged into his body, by Charles, as he was on his way to see his wife who gave birth to their first child.

Mohamed Arshad Ally never got the chance to see his new born child.

Ally’s daughter Zainab….

Justice Barlow determined during Charles’ sentencing hearing on Tuesday that a 30-year jail term, less time served (about five years), was appropriate for the offence.

Prior to being eligible for parole, he must serve a minimum of 21 years.

In order to help with his rehabilitation and reintegration into society, the Judge mandated that he take part in anger management classes and skills training while incarcerated.

The confessed killer was defended by Attorney-at-Law Kevin Morgan. The case for the prosecution was led by State Counsel Muntaz Ali.

According to reports, the confessed killer had a dispute with one of Ally’s in-laws some months before the deadly attack. The matter reportedly ended up in the Magistrate’s Court and Charles was jailed.

He was reportedly released from prison a week before he killed Ally.
