Mahaicony River residents receive black tanks to assist with access to potable water
A transformative initiative by the government is set to significantly enhance the lives of more than 200 households residing within the Mahaicony River and its surrounding areas in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice).
This impactful development addresses a critical need for improved access to potable water, marking a noteworthy stride towards enhancing the well-being of the community.
A noteworthy event unfolded on Thursday, as the Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, made a visit to the region to spearhead the distribution of 1,700-liter black tanks to a total of 202 households.
The magnitude of this endeavor is underscored by an investment exceeding $8 million, a testament to the government’s commitment to ameliorating the living conditions of its citizens.
The impetus behind this timely intervention can be traced back to a commitment made by President Dr. Irfaan Ali following concerns raised by residents during a farmers’ meeting held last December.
At this gathering, Minister Mustapha, cognizant of the challenges faced by the community in accessing potable water, took the initiative to address the pressing issue.
During the meeting, where farmers were grappling with saltwater intrusion in various cultivation areas along the Mahaicony River, the inadequacy of potable water supply emerged as a prominent concern.
Notably, women in the community were among those vocalizing their distress over the prevailing situation.
In response to these concerns, Minister Mustapha took the matter to Cabinet, prompting swift action from President Ali.
The President, demonstrating a proactive approach, directed the establishment of systems to ensure the provision of a 1,700-liter tank for each household in need.
Less than a month after this pivotal decision, the tangible results of this commitment materialized as the minister led the distribution of the tanks, providing much-needed relief to the community.
The significance of this initiative resonated beyond the Agriculture Ministry, as Minister Annand Persaud from the Ministry of Local Government also attended the meeting.
The collaboration across ministries underscores the comprehensive and multifaceted approach adopted by the government to address the diverse needs of the community.
