Police launches Agriculture Project for youths

An Agriculture project was on Saturday, October 01, 2022 launched at the Ruimveldt Police Station compound as part of the Guyana Police Force’s social crime prevention initiative. The initiative in the form of a farming exercise, benefitted various youth groups within the Region Two sub-division.

In brief remarks, Sergeant Griffith who headed the excercise thanked the children along with their guardians for taking part in the activity. He also noted that the excercise exposes the children to intricacies of life and the transmission of norms and values, which can improve better social skills and behavior.

Mr. Barlow, an Agronomist and Senior Training Manager at the National Agriculture Research Extrnsion Institute(NAREI), conducted a brief lecture on Agriculture with the children where he addressed topics including:

. Different soil types.

. Spacing for planning the various crops.

. Weather conditions for planting.

. The types of manure used for planting, a demonstration was shown to the children on completion of the lecture.

The Youth Groups which participated were Ruimveldt Dynamic Leaders Youth Group, Albouystown Faith Base Youth Group, Agricola Rising Stars Youth Group, North Ruimveldt Goals Achiever Youth Group and East-La Penitence Youth Group.

The children planted crops including Bora, Tomatoes, Balanjay, Pepper and Eschellot.

Others present at the excercise were Michelle Lam Dudik, Program Assistant for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL), US Embassy Georgetown, Pastor Jean Roberts Rural Sergeant and Deputy Chairperson of Ruimveldt Police Station Management committee, Mr. Nankumar Rampersaud Businessman and Treasure of Ruimveldt Police Station Management committee, Mr. Peter Assing Businessman and stakeholder, respective Youth groups Laisons, Cpl Calder Clarke, L/Lcpl Manu, and other ranks.
