Persons desirous of becoming Nurses in Region Nine are now being afforded the opportunity to study in their region. Over the years, the healthcare workers were forced to travel to Georgetown to undergo training. However, on Monday, the Nursing Assistant training commenced with an orientation in the Upper Takutu/ Upper Essequibo Region with a total of 34 students. Of the total, 29 students are from Region Nine and five are from Region Eight.

The training will be done at the newly built Annexe of the Charles Rose School of Nursing in Lethem. The program will run for two years.

Speaking with the Big Smith News Watch, the Communication Officer of Region Nine Miss Norma Griffith said, the program is as a result of collaboration between the region which will be providing all textbooks and other stationery for students along with meals, accommodation and uniform; and the Ministry of Health.

The opening of the School of Nursing (annexe) will ease the burden of students from the region who previously had to travel to the coast to attend the school of nursing. It is expected that students from the hinterland to unlock new potentials and achieve ambitions within the health and Nursing disciplines without having to worry about the burden of relocating to do so.

The newly formed Annex according to Griffith, will work in collaboration with other Nursing schools in the country in order to promote better delivery of healthcare in Guyana.

Present at the ceremony that was held to kick start the program were; The principal Tutor (ag) of the Charles Rose School of Nursing, Miss Tracey Gentle, nursing tutor, doctors, Nurses and regional officials.
