(Man caught dumping garbage into waterway at Meadow Bank)

A total of fourteen (14) persons have been charged for the illegal dumping of garbage in the capital city of Georgetown. Following a joint clean-up exercise of the city on January 14-15 by the Government and private sector organisatons, the Guyana Police Force in collaboration with the City Constabulary began enforcing stricter measures against littering.

The first three persons, including a store owner, were arrested on January 17, 2022 and charged with dumping litter in a public place. They were granted $40,000 bail when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Others were arrested for dumping garbage on Regent Street, Princess Street, East La Penitence, King Street and other areas in Georgetown.

The accused persons include vagrants who were solicited to dispose of garbage, vendors and business owners. The vagrants in some instances, chose to clean the garbage which they disposed minutes earlier.

On Sunday morning, the Solid Waste Management Unit of the City Council cleaned the bus and car parks. Anyone found littering these areas will be charged.

According to Head of the Solid Waste Department Walter Narine, once arrested by the police or the City Constabulary Officers, defaulters are placed on $20,000 bail before they are dragged before the Court which can make them pay a fine of $25,000 to $100,000.

Citizens are urged to submit photos and videos of litterbugs to 623-5010.
