Blocked sewer chamber led to St Rose’s High School issue – GWI

Guyana Water Inc is once again calling on contractors to consult with the company prior to construction at building sites in and around Central Georgetown.
The Company said that this is necessary because of the location of its sewer chambers as it cited the failure of the contractor working on the St Roses High School to consult on its works at that Church Street location.
Classes at the school as well as construction had to be halted after sewage filled the compound recently. GWI said this was due to sand entering the sewer chambers.
“This caused blockage to the sewer lines as far as Camp and Murray Streets, while at the school itself, the gully chambers were found packed with sand and construction debris,” GWI said on Wednesday.
The situation was compounded by the presence of a large amount of solid waste in the manholes and street sewers, GWI pointed out as it said the waste could have entered the manholes by way of littering.
It said too that the construction waste is what prevented toilets in the school from being flushed.
