(Charged: Joshua Mentore, Dead: Kareem Powley)

A 21-year-old aviation officer who is accused of causing the death of his best friend in a Mandela Avenue, Georgetown accident was on Friday charged and released on $150,000 bail.

Joshua Mentore of Pattensen Sophia, Greater Georgetown appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on June 27, 2021, at Nelson Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, he rode motorcycle CK 7783 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Kareem Powley, 20, of Tucville, Georgetown.

He is being represented by Attorney-at-law Darren Wade.

Facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that on the day in question, motorcycle #CK 7783 was proceeding north on the western carriageway of Nelson Mandela Avenue at a fast rate of speed.

The Police said that Mentore alleges that a black motorcar which was proceeding in the said direction to the right side of him swerved left (west) and caused him to lose control.

As a result, he told the Police that he ran off the road and collided with a pile of stones on the said road’s western parapet.  Mentore said that he and his best friend fell onto the road.

The pillion rider, Kareem Powley was picked up in an unconscious state by the EMT but succumbed while receiving medical attention.

As a condition of the bail, Mentore was instructed to lodge his passport with the court and report to the Brickdam Police Station every Monday until the hearing and determination of his trial.

Shortly after his appearance before Magistrate Daly, Mentore was taken before Magistrate Clive Nurse to answer to charges for traffic offences. He was charged with being an unlicensed driver, breach of insurance, and operating an uncertified motor vehicle.

He pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was released on a total of $55,000.
