Hotspots with large number of COVID-19 cases continue to concern the Ministry of Health says Minister Dr Frank Anthony. In his daily update, the Minister said several hotspots are bring monitored. The Minister said there has been a noted correlation between vaccine hesitancy and rising numbers of COVID-19 cases in some community. The Minister identified Ameila’s Ward in Linden as one such community, there are some 50 actives cases in that area the Minister said.

“So that is an area of concern as well, so one, we have cases that are increasing in areas of Region Ten and at the same time, we have reluctance or hesitancy in terms of taking vaccines, so those two can be a deadly combination,” Dr Anthony said.

The Minister said too that there is ongoing awareness about the vaccine programme for those who are hesitant as he warned there could be more cases if persons are not vaccinated.

“We have several hotpots in different regions, in Region Two, I would say the hotspot there would be Good Hope, where we have about 16 cases in and around that Good Hope area, in Region Three, the hotspot in and around there for a few weeks now, would have been Tuschen and we continue to see cases in Tuschen, right now we have 39 active cases.”

Among the hotspots though out the country are Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara with 46 active cases, Sophia with 30 cases and Kitty with 24 cases. Mon Repos has some 15-20 cases Dr Anthony said. In Region Six, New Amsterdam has 27 active cases, Bartica in Region Seven recorded some 58 active cases the Minister said too.

There are some 1,971 active cases country wide.

Citizens are being reminded to full the public health measures in place. This is in addition to wearing their face masks in all public spaces and washing their hands or sanitising regularly.
