Several persons who made racially insensitive comments/ post on social media resulting in racial or ethnic violence among the Guyanese people have been charged for the offense. They were each ordered to pay a fine of $100,000.

The charges were brought against them by the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC). Those charged are Tiffany Greene, Lashona Chester, Stacy Smart, and Glynis Gibson. They appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. The quartet pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that during the month of March 2020, on their Facebook pages, they cause racial or ethnic violence or hatred and exciting hostility or ill-will on the basis of race.

The apologetic women begged the magistrate to be lenient citing that they are first time offenders. The Magistrate in handing down her ruling told the defendants that the charge carried a fined together with imprisonment for two years.

However, after taking into consideration that they are first time offenders, the magistrate fined them $100,000 each and let them off with a stern warning.
