A teen mom who is accused of dumping her crying one-year-old son in a drain and leaving him to die was Tuesday charged and remanded to prison for murder. 18-year-old Martha Miguel appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.

She was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on April 9, 2021, at Jango Street, Parika Backdam, East Bank Essequibo, she murdered her child Ekron Miguel. She was remanded to prison until June 1, 2021.

According to reports, on the day in question, the woman and her child were returning home from Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, when he started to cry because he was hungry. The frustrated woman alleged that she wrapped the child in a blanket and placed him at the side of the road in a clump of bushes near a drain. She reportedly then left and went to a friend’s house to get something for him to eat.

The friend then questioned the young mother about the child’s whereabouts and she attempted to escape by jumping into a nearby canal. As such, the Police were summoned.

When they arrived and questioned the teenage mother, she took ranks to a drain where her son’s lifeless body was discovered. The little boy was rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
