Teachers protest for higher salaries and better benefits

Numerous teachers nationwide have initiated a strike as part of planned industrial action organized by the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU).

Teachers engaging in a protest outside the office of the Minister of Education, emphasize the need for higher salaries and additional benefits.

Participants in the demonstration, expressed concern about teachers burdened by numerous loans due to inadequate salaries covering their expenses.

Similar demonstrations have reportedly occurred in various regions, with teachers vocalizing their primary concern: the demand for a salary increase. T

hose protesting outside the Brickdam office received support from GTU leaders, including President Mark Lyte and General Secretary Coretta McDonald.

Official statistics regarding the extent of teacher participation in the protest are not currently available. In Central Georgetown, approximately 200 teachers gathered outside the Ministry of Education’s Brickdam office, displaying placards and advocating for improved salaries and other benefits. 

While some educators have chosen to remain in their classrooms without conducting lessons, others have taken to the streets in various regions, staging protests outside Ministry of Education buildings.

The Union is urging the Education Ministry to engage in discussions with them to address the proposed issues and reach a resolution.
