The Ministry of Education will soon commence the distribution of the Government’s ‘Because We Care’ cash grants to assist parents of school-aged children. However, the Ministry has indicated that only those who have returned the schools’ textbooks will be eligible.

In a Memo circulated on Thursday (June 30, 2022), Chief Education Officer Dr. Marcel Hutson advised that it is necessary that all primary and secondary school students return textbooks received in the academic year: September 2021-July 2022.

Headteachers were told to ensure that all textbooks are returned to the respective schools on or before Thursday, July 7, 2022. A slip will be issued stating that this was done.

Where loaned textbooks are lost or destroyed, parents will be given the option of buying and replacing those textbooks.

Further, a fee of five thousand dollars (5,000) will be charged for each textbook lost or destroyed. This fee will apply to those parents who cannot replace lost or destroyed textbooks.

The Headteachers are required to submit to the Departments of Education on or before July 14, 2022, a list of names of students as per school and level, who have failed to return or pay for textbooks lost or destroyed.

The Government has begun providing textbooks for primary and secondary students at public schools. The return of the books is necessary to be issued to students proceeding to the respective new classes from September 2022.
