Healthcare workers, drivers, others given two weeks to get vaccinated

Following protests over the Government’s requirement for healthcare workers and operators of public transportation to be vaccinated, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony has relaxed the measures.

In a statement late Wednesday night, Dr. Anthony said these persons have requested additional time to comply with the Order. As such, he said they “will be given two weeks to comply with the Order.”

Healthcare workers and public transport operators, under the order were required to provide their vaccination card along with an identification document when requested to do so by a police officer or anyone authorized by the Minister of Health.

The statement came as citizens blocked the access road to the Wismar bridge and staged protest action in Linden on Wednesday into the night against the Government’s policy. The policy led to healthcare workers being locked out of the Linden Hospital Complex on Monday for being unvaccinated.

According to the Health Minister’s statement, he said the Government of Guyana has secured enough vaccines for the adult population. Guyanese have a choice of first and second dose AstraZeneca or SinoPharm and first dose Sputnik V. Additionally, the Pfizer vaccine for our children will soon be available.

“I wish to reiterate that the vaccines are safe, effective and if you are fully vaccinated, it will reduce your chances of infection, hospitalization and death. Please protect yourself, your family and your community. Please get vaccinated!” he pleaded.
