Murder accused Sampson Gangerpersaud (left) and Krish Nandlall

Two men were today remanded to prison when they appeared before Magistrate Renita Singh, virtually, at the Whim Magistrate’s Court, as they were charged for the murder of 27-year-old Corentyne labourer, Orlando Michael Jonas called ‘Lando’, of Number One Village, Berbice.

The men, Krish Nandlall, 27, of Chesney, and Sampson Gangapersaud, 25, of Tain, were not required to plead to the joint charge. They are expected to appear before the court again on September 29th.

This publication understands that on Saturday, September 5th, the two men attacked and robbed Jonas and his friend, Mahendra Ramnarine on the Kilcoy Public Road. As a result, a scuffle ensued between the men, and Jonas was stabbed several times about his body. He received a gaping wound to the left side of his face and was left lying unconscious on the roadway.

Jonas was picked up and taken to the Port Mourant Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Ramnarine was also injured during the ordeal, as he received a slash to the mouth.

From CCTV footage, it appears as though Jonas and Ramnarine, who were riding their bicycles along the Public Road, turned around to confront the two men who are now before the court.

However, during questioning, Gangapersaud allegedly told police that after they were attacked by Jonas and Ramnarine, he whipped out a knife which he had in his possession and slashed Ramnarine and Jonas across their faces, and then dealt Jonas a stab to his abdomen.

Jonas’ death has caused an uproar on the Corentyne which led to a number of residents, who are grieving the loss of the young man, taking to the streets in frustration and beginning a protest for justice for the young man.

Jonas was described as a hardworking and caring father of one.
