Cuban National killed in crash on Demerara River Bridge access road

A 65-year-old Cuban national lost his life early Wednesday morning after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge Access Road, East Bank Demerara.
Dead is Gerardo Machado Valdivia of Providence, East Bank Demerara.
The accident occurred at about 6:42 a.m. and involved three vehicles. Reports indicate that Valdivia was attempting to cross the roadway when he was struck by an oncoming car.
The impact threw the pedestrian onto the opposite carriageway, where he sustained severe head and body injuries. The driver of the vehicle then lost control, crashing into the concrete median before colliding with two other vehicles travelling in the opposite direction.
Emergency Medical Technicians responded to the scene, where Valdivia was pronounced dead.
His body has since been taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
No other fatalities were reported. The circumstances surrounding the fatal collision remain under investigation.
