71-Y-O dead following Pomeroon boat crash

Police in Regional Division #2 have launched an investigation into a fatal river accident that occurred on Monday, February 9, 2026, at around 15:30 hrs at Kabakaburi, Upper Pomeroon River, Essequibo, which claimed the life of 71-year-old pensioner Felix Smith of St. Monica Village.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a boat operated by a 36-year-old woman from Karawab Village was traveling along the river with two passengers when it reportedly collided with another wooden vessel captained by Smith. A female occupant was also aboard the deceased’s boat at the time.
Following the collision, Smith was found unconscious in his boat and was rushed to the Karawab Health Centre before being transferred to the Charity Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a medical doctor.
His body has since been taken to the hospital mortuary and is awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
The operator of the other vessel is currently in police custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
