SOCU Head contributes 25% to Brutus $20 Million schoonord property purchase

OCTOBER 23, 2024

Assistant Commissioner of Police Calvin Brutus has come forward to reveal that the head of the Special Organised Crime Unit, Fizal Karimbaksh ‘reportedly’ contributed 25% of the total sum that he, Brutus, paid to purchase a property in West Demerara earlier this year which carried a price tag of GYD 20, 000,000.00 (twenty Million Guyana Dollars). Brutus has also confirmed that the SOCU head did indeed gift him and his wife, a substantial monetary gift for their wedding back in 2023.

Brutus, through his lawyer, has formally written to the Director of Public Prosecution detailing several incidents, actions, and maneuvers by Fizal Karimbaksh, who headed SOCU, that have significantly affected the investigation’s credibility. He is asking the DPP to conduct a complete review of the matter before her to ensure that fairness and due process prevail.

The embattled Assistant Commissioner of Police provided a list of more than two dozen persons who SOCU interviewed as part of the investigation but refused to include those statements in the files that were sent for legal advice, thus preventing the DPP Chambers with a complete and holistic view of all parties involved and all actions taken. The Lawyer believes SOCU has blindsided the DPP Chambers with only statements that seek to incriminate his client.

In the correspondence seen by this publication,  the lawyer is alleging that SOCU has violated Brutus’s constitutional rights under article 144 of the constitution of Guyana Chapter 1:01.

This publication first reported that Assistant Commissioner of Police Fizal Karimbaksh attended and gifted the Brutus Couple a large sum of money as part of his best wishes for their wedding.

Issues of conflict of interest and ethical standards have not been addressed by SOCU Head Fizal Karimbaksh or the Guyana Police Force even as the investigation continues.
