CARICOM, under the stewardship of its Chairman overseeing Agriculture, Food, and Nutrition Security, President of Guyana Dr. Irfaan Ali, is steadfastly progressing towards a significant reduction of the region’s import expenditure by 25% before 2025. Progress across nearly all Caribbean nations indicates promising advancements.

During the conclusion of the 46th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM at the Marriott Hotel, President Ali affirmed the community’s commitment to achieving this target, expressing optimism regarding its realization.

While acknowledging certain challenges faced by some nations due to their unique environmental circumstances, President Ali assured that tailored initiatives devised during the four-day gathering will be swiftly implemented to aid these countries in meeting the set objectives.

According to a report from the Department of Public Information, at his inaugural address last Sunday, the President unveiled a new regional ambition: to eradicate hunger and malnutrition by 2030, acknowledging the stark reality that 57% of the Caribbean populace grapples with food insecurity.

Expounding on this critical issue during Wednesday’s press briefing, he emphasized the paramount importance of addressing facets such as food accessibility, quality, and nutritional value in tackling food insecurity effectively.
