First-time water access for Sandhill Region 8 residents.

The government’s commitment to enhancing access to clean water in Guyana’s Hinterland has become a reality for another Amerindian community situated in the North Pakaraimas, Region 8.

On Sunday, Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, together with the villagers of Sandhill in Region 8 and their leaders, commemorated the inauguration of a $36 million water supply system. This new infrastructure is designed to cater to the needs of the community’s population, totaling one hundred and twenty-nine (129) individuals.

Prior to the official launch, Minister Croal and his team, including GWI’s Hinterland Services Director, Mr. Ramchand Jailall, and other technical experts, held a meeting with residents at the village benab. During this session, residents received updates on the recently approved National Budget, with the Minister highlighting ongoing interventions benefiting Guyana’s Hinterland regions. Furthermore, residents were encouraged to voice any concerns they had and offer suggestions for addressing them.

In addressing the investment made in the new water supply facility, the Minister emphasized the importance of community involvement in ensuring its long-term effectiveness for future generations. Previously, the community primarily relied on rainwater harvesting for its water needs.

Constructed by R. Kissoon Contracting Services, the new facility features a concrete intake pumping chamber at a nearby creek source, along with the installation of 800 meters of 50mm (2”) PVC pipes and 400 meters of 19mm (3/4”) PVC pipes, serving 20 households. Additionally, the project included the construction of a concrete slab, installation of storage tanks, and powering the facility with a photovoltaic pumping system.

Furthermore, recognizing the community’s active sports group, the visiting team generously donated sports equipment to support their activities.
