Rawle Munroe, the man who was on trial for fatally stabbing ex-soldier Edward Beveney during a confrontation over a bicycle on Independence Day of 2018, has been acquitted of the crime.

This was after the trial Judge upheld a no-case submission made on Tuesday on his behalf by his lawyer Teriq Mohammed. Munroe’s trial started last Thursday at the Demerara High Court.

The 40-year-old man of Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara (ECD) had denied the charge which stated that on May 26, 2018, at Beterverwagting, ECD, he murdered Beveney, 23.

Following the close of the prosecution’s case which was led by State Counsel Cicelia Corbin, Mohammed presented a no-case submission on his client’s behalf.

That submission was upheld on Tuesday by Justice Sandil Kissoon, who then directed the jury to return a formal verdict of not guilty in favour of Munroe.

This publication was reliably informed that Justice Kissoon found that the injuries Munroe inflicted on Beveney were in self defence.

Also called ‘Akim’ and ‘Buddha’, 23-year-old Beveney, a miner of Lot 115 Ogle Street, Triumph, ECD was reportedly stabbed several times about his body including his chest and left eye during a confrontation with Munroe over a bicycle.

According to reports, the now dead man had attacked Munroe after being informed that he was the one who removed his bicycle which he had parked outside a shop.

Beveney, reports state, chopped Munroe, who in return, stabbed him several times with an icepick. Beveney was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

His cause of death was given as  perforation of the lungs due to multiple stab wounds.
