– President eyeing Guyana’s participation in 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a night where we chose to recognise all the good things being done under the present administration under the One Guyana initiative,
Football was in the spotlight.

The inaugural President’s One Guyana Cup Football Tournament was launched last evening at State House. The event saw the presence of
esteemed investors, Ministers of Government, athletes and other dignitaries.

The event was aimed at advertising a new format of football games that will be played across all ten (10) administrative regions with one goal in mind, that is, making it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup and also to take the sport of football to an even higher level, one where players and coaches can further develop their skills in a safer environment where measures will be put in place so that skills can be nurtured from the Primary and Secondary Schools stages, This was proposed by President of Guyana, Dr. Irfaan Ali.

The President contended that with such a beautiful football initiative being rolled out from December 11 -January 1, there should be some optimism about what will transpire from the local football lovers, with over 30 million dollars being invested into the ‘’One Guyana Cup’ from investors such as; DIGICEL, GTT, ANSA MCAL, E-NETWORKS, NEW GPC and others, this tournament should be considered a very exciting one.

President Ali noted that a format that will move away from clubs to communities vying for supremacy is not only something new, but also it is something that stands on what the government believes; and that is that is having an all-inclusive Guyana, a new Guyana, where everyone benefits from resources provided, regardless of race, religion or political belief.

Speaking on the prospect of Guyana entering the World Cup in the future, he stated that ‘’it’s going to take a collective effort if they’re to accomplish their overall task of making it to the next world cup’’, one which will be played in north America and also will be an expanded version moving away from 32 teams to 48 teams allowing a small nation such as ours to make a surprise inclusion on Footballs grandest stage coming 2026.
