A drunk driver on Sunday morning slammed into a motorcar on JB Singh Road, Georgetown causing the death of 27-year-old Ian Mekdeci and critical injuries to 31-year-old Sheik Baksh.

Police in a statement said 37-year-old Roberto Narine of Peters Hall, East Bank Demerara (EBD) was driving motor Jeep #PTT 4136 along JB Singh Road when he failed to stop at the intersection at Thomas Lands Road. As a result, he collided with motor car #PXX 4592 which is owned and driven by Baksh of Kitty, Georgetown with Mekdeci in the passenger seat.

Mekdeci and Baksh received injuries and were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital by ambulance in an unconscious condition, where Mekdeci subsequently died whilst receiving medical attention.

Baksh was admitted as a patient in the Emergency Unit at the hospital suffering from a broken left arm, laceration to the head and a punctured left lung. His condition is listed as critical.

The accident occurred at about 2:00h.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of motor jeep #PTT 4136 which showed 162% and 151% micrograms respectively, which is way above the legal limit. The driver is presently in custody assisting with the investigation.

Police visited the accident scene and took a statement from an independent witness. Checks were made for CCTV footage which will be reviewed by investigators.
