Opposition Leader Joseph Harmon on Thursday night launched his campaign to lead the largest political opposition party, the People’s National Congress/Reform. His campaign launch at the Herdmanston Lodge, Queenstown, Georgetown saw support from several party members including Senior Counsel Roysdale Forde, Annette Ferguson, Coretta McDonald, and Ganesh Mahipaul.

Forde in his endorsement speech, said he believes Mr. Harmon is the best suitable candidate for the position. “I am confident and sure the decision he has made is the best thing for the party and best thing for the country. I stand here sure of my endorsement,” he noted.

Similar sentiments were expressed by Ferguson who praised the Opposition Leader as someone who is hardworking, dedicated, committed, and has given selflessly to his political party.

McDonald also stated that Harmon has in the past not only dedicated his resources to the party but all of which he had access to. “This young man is no ordinary young man, this toung man was selected for a time such as this,” she said.

In his official address to those gathered at the event expressed confidence that he will emerge winner of the elections slated for the PNC/R’s 21st biennial congress later this year.

“I am prepared to sign on the dotted line to work together with whoever comes out the winner of this process, but I know I will be that person so I expect other persons will do likewise,” the Opposition Leader stated confidently.

Among his plans outlined for the party is the commitment to unifying its members, developing a strong youth and women movement while empowering partners, providing more resource to the Guyana Youth and Student Movement (GYSM) and moving the party forward.

“I pledge to work with every member of our party in ensuring that our party moves from greatness to greatness,” Harmon said.

“Win lose or draw, the bigger picture is our party,” he added.

Since announcing his intention to run for leader of the party, Harmon has been on the receiving end of major criticisms, but he made it clear that he is not fazed by what is written in the daily newspapers. “To critics, I am Joseph Harmon and I will stand firm, I am not afraid of what you have to write,” he noted at the campaign launch which was livestreamed on his Facebook page.

Others who took the podium to support the candidate were Ganesh Mahipaul, Daniel Seeram and Attorney-at-law Darren Wade.

Reports are that Harmon is contesting the elections against former Managing Director of the Guyana Water Inc. Dr. Richard Van West-Charles and PNC/R member Aubrey Norton.
