Dog food vendor who picked shackle, escaped from Police station remand

A dog food vendor who Police said unlock his shackle and ran out of the Brickdam Police Station was on Wednesday remanded to prison for the offence.

21-year-old Anthony Prince of 29 C Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Prince pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on June 9, 2021, at Brickdam Police Station, Georgetown, while being in custody on an arrest warrant, he escaped from the said custody.

Facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that on the day in question, Prince along with one Clive Fields were arrested on a report of simple larceny committed on Nickle Peters which occurred on April 24, 2021, at Brickdam Georgetown.

An investigation was conducted and Prince was charged for the offence of simple larceny and was placed on station bail. He was then made to sign a recognizance and was to attend the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on April 30, 2021. He did not attend Court and as such an arrest warrant was issued for him.

However, on June 9, 2021, ranks acting on information, arrested Prince and placed him in custody. While in custody, at the Brickdam Station, he was seated on the prisoner’s bench with his feet shackled. However, he managed to pick the lock and made good his escape.

He was later rearrested and charged. The prosecutor objected to the defendant being admitted to bail on the ground that he was previously charged and sentenced to imprisonment. In the end, Prince was remanded to prison until July 14.
