The fight against crime has been an uphill battle for the Guyana Police Force, Regional Division 2, Essequibo. However,  Commander, Superintendent Crystal Robinson has confirmed a reduction in serious crimes across the region.

Onderneeming and Charity, were both listed as ‘crime hotspots’ on the Essequibo Coast.

Onderneeming developed a reputation for armed robberies while Charity which is know for  commercial activities, battled with narcotics use and petty robberies.

Onderneeming residents say the community has been ‘quiet’ for some time.

“we use to have frequent armed robberies, soon yuh miss somebody breaking in yuh house. Or somebody just pass and open fire on yuh house. But for the longest time things been quiet.” one person told us.

During Tuesday’s interview with this publication,  Commander Robinson revealed that there have been no reports of armed robberies from within Onderneeming for the year 2021.

“This was accomplished, by means of increased patrolling, which heightened the police presence,” Robinson said.

The Commander pointed out that while there has been a reduction of crime in one hotspot, there is still work to do in the Charity area.

“This year we’ve seen a great reduction in crime, charity new housing scheme, still is a major hotspot. Our plan to tackle this area includes more cycle, motorcycle and ATV patrols.  We also have the Police Community Group assisting with patrols… All crimes have been solved except for one recent armed robbery at Charity.” the commander concluded.
