CSEC Top Awardee: Guyanese Riana Toney addressing the Grenadian audience Thursday evening.

In what was largely expected, Guyana once again dominated the Caribbean Examination Council’s (CXC) award ceremony which was held in Grenada last evening to recognize the exemplary performance of students across the region.

The two most coveted awards – the Most Outstanding Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) student, and the Most Outstanding Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) student – were copped by two Guyanese.

Riana Toney, a student of Anna Regina Secondary in Region Two walked away with the Top CSEC Award after securing 19 Grade One passes, while repeated scholar, Michael Bhopaul of Queens College secured the Top CAPE Award with his 16 Grade Ones.

Bhopaul, who was absent from the award ceremony was also presented with the Dennis Irvine Award which is given to the region’s top CAPE student. This is the third time a Queen’s College student has taken the award. Last year, Aadilah Ali achieved Grade Ones in 14 CAPE units and Grade II in one unit.

Meanwhile, Samuel Haynes of Queens College walked away with the CSEC Most Outstanding Science Candidate award with his 18 Grade Ones, while Brianna Gopie of the same school copped the Most Outstanding Candidate in Business Education award with her 16 Grade Ones.

Meanwhile the prestigious Queens College (QC) was awarded CXC’s CAPE School of the Year award which was received by the school’s headmistress, Jackie Benn.

In offering the vote of thanks, Toney extended congratulations to all the awardees and encouraged them to continue to reach for the stars.
“Continue working hard, set your goals and stop at no cost to transform them into reality” she said, adding that success demands sacrifice which they all must be willing to continue to make.

She also used the opportunity to express appreciation to the parents and teachers of all students who wrote CSEC and CAPE this year, noting that their sacrifices do not go unnoticed. She ended by thanking CXC for recognizing their efforts and rewarding them accordingly.
“Thank you CXC for your continued support… and for [the] opportunities you continue to offer us” she said.

Toney secured 19 Grade Ones at CSEC in: Agricultural Science, Biology, Caribbean History, Chemistry, English A, English B, Geography, Information Technology, Integrated Science, Mathematics, Office Administration, Physics, Principles of Business, Religious Education, Social Studies, Spanish, Electronic Document Preparation and Management, Physical Education and Sport, and Human and Social Biology.

Haynes secured 18 Grade Ones at CSEC in: Agricultural Science, Biology, Caribbean History, Chemistry, Economics, English Language, English Literature, Geography, Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics, Integrated Science, Social Studies, Spanish, Electronic Document Preparation and Management (EDPM), Physical Education and Sport, Human and Social Biology, and Additional Mathematics.

QC Student Gopie was among those who received awards last evening

Gopie secured 16 Grade Ones at CSEC in: Economics, English Language, English Literature, Geography, Information Technology, Integrated Science, Office Administration, Physics, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, Social Studies, Spanish, Electronic Document Preparation and Management, Physical Education and Sport, Additional Mathematics, and Food and Nutrition and Health.
