COMMISSIONER’S DRIVER ACCUSED OF RECKLESS/DANGEROUS DRIVING

Earlier this afternoon, the Sports Utility Vehicle, a Land Cruiser Prado which is assigned to Commissioner of Police Leslie James slammed into a parked water delivery canter at Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara.

As a result of the impact, the Personal Assistant to the Commissioner whose name was given as Roberts suffered a broken shoulder while the commissioner and his driver are said to have escaped unhurt.

The personal Assistant was seated in the front seat while the Top Cop was in his usual position at the back of the vehicle seated behind the passenger’s seat.

By late this afternoon, all three of the police were taken to a private city hospital where they were examined by doctors. When the BIG Smith Crime Watch arrived at that health facility, staff there confirmed that the Commissioner was seeking medical attention there and that he was in the Emergency Room.

Personnel from the welfare department of the force were also at the facility according to one senior police source from Eve Leary who spoke with us.

Further to that, there were two young men who were seated in the parked water delivery truck who were also rushed to the hospital closest to the accident. They were said to be suffering broken bones and in one instance severe back injury.

Persons who live in the area and were on their bridges when the crash took place said that the blue and white police vehicle (Commissioner’s Land cruiser) was proceeding along the road in the direction of Georgetown when the driver reportedly clipped collided with the canter.

That impact sent the Top Cop’s vehicle flying out of control further up the road and also had its side ripped out by a parked bush truck.

They said there were no sirens on for the Top Cop’s vehicle at the time. After the impact, the police were informed and residents said a number of police vehicles quickly arrived on the scene and whisked away the Top Cop and his staff while the two young men who were pinned in the vehicle had to be left there until they were set free from the mangled canter with the use of cutting instruments.

Guyana in the past has lost some very senior police road accidents. Former Commissioner of Police Henry Green who was on administrative leave crashed and died on the spot a few years ago along the West Demerara Public Road.
Former Assistant Commissioner of Police and ‘A’ Division Commander Derick Josiah was seriously injured in an accident also along the West Demerara Public Road and he succumbed weeks after while doing a routine check at the Woodlands Hospital.

Former Assistant Commissioner of Police Balram Persaud who was the No. 2 man in the force, died following a vehicular accident also along the West Demerara Public Road. He died while in the recovery room.
