November 16 2024 – The Ministry of Agriculture’s Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Control Board (PTCCB) officially commissioned its new $115 million administrative building at Mon Repos.

This state-of-the-art facility underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening the management of pesticides and toxic chemicals across multiple sectors in Guyana.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha, delivering the keynote address at the event, emphasized the critical importance of sound chemical management.

He noted that the commissioning of this facility reflects the government’s support for the PTCCB’s expanding mandate, which now spans agriculture, mining, manufacturing, industrial operations, oil and gas, housing, and commercial activities.

When the agency started, its focus was mainly on the agriculture sector. But today, the PTCCB is multi-sectoral, managing chemicals across a broad range of industries, Minister Mustapha said.

Looking ahead, Minister Mustapha announced two major initiatives: beginning in 2025, Guyana will implement new regulations governing the transportation of toxic chemicals on roadways.

Additionally, the PTCCB will start testing for and monitoring lead in paints, backed by a $43.8 million investment in advanced equipment.

Registrar of the PTCCB, Ms. Trecia David, highlighted the growing global demand for effective chemical management systems due to increasing production and trade. She credited Guyana’s progress in this area to strong government backing and political will.

The new administrative building will serve as a hub for delivering enhanced chemical management services to stakeholders, ensuring public safety and environmental sustainability across Guyana.
